The Ballad Of The Blueberry Pie

Blueberry pie and I go way back....

When I was a kid, my mother, little brother and I lived with my grandparents for about 5 years. Not a very good period in our lives, but we had a roof over our heads, and food on the dinner table every night...all was well, except for this one wrinkle, we never, ever got dessert...

yes, I said never. ever. got. dessert.

Let the weeping begin...

And one of my first memories as a child was going out to dinner with my grandparents to the Elks Club. A big deal since it was a rarity to go out for dinner. But it became an utterly ginormous big deal when we were told...

"yes, tonight you may have dessert."

As I was lifted back into my chair after having fainted, I noticed this little folded card on the table by the salt and pepper shakers. How this mouth-watering vision had earlier escaped my eyes, I'll never really know. But there it was. Teasing me. Taunting me. Sticking it's blue tongue out at me and sing-songing, "nanny-nanny boo-boo!" What was this cardboard vision of sugar, you ask?

The Blueberry Pie Special. Ala-mode.
wait, I'm feeling faint again...

So with much glee, I ordered my first piece of blueberry pie. And we've had a love/love relationship ever since...

I love to eat it. And it loves to make me fat.

And so for that reason only, I don't eat blueberry pie anymore. I avert my eyes from it on my menu when we go out to dinner. I walked quickly past the frozen pie section at the Winn-Dixie when I'm shopping. I drive fast by diners, truck stops, and Denny's. I avoid blueberry pie at all cost during the whole year.

Except during Christmas.

I have blueberry pie during the Christmas holidays. I enjoy a piece or two during the holidays and then when New Year's rolls around, I'm done with blueberry pie for another year.

Except this year...

I baked a blueberry pie on Tuesday afternoon (frozen one, I got lazy this year) and then left the house to run some errands. And when I returned home a couple of hours later...

no pie left.

I don't what came over me. I went from the kitchen to the each room in the house, looking for the tell-tale signs of blueberry pie consumption...dirty plates and forks, blueberry stained paper napkins, half-empty glasses of milk. I was like a crazed animal, searching room to room. I wanted answers, I wanted justice, I wanted to know WHO ATE ALL THE BLUEBERRY PIE!?!?

It took some time, but I finally got my answer. And my heart broke when I learned the truth. I didn't want to believe it. My beloved children had scarfed down the entire blueberry pie while I was gone. They ate the whole pie. Not a berry left. Not a crust crumb. Nothing.

I think I even cried myself to sleep that night.

But the next morning I awoke, made my apologizes to the family for my bizarre blueberry pie meltdown, and went into the kitchen to get a cup of coffee. And as I was pouring, I froze. Could it be? Was my mind playing tricks on me? Was I remembering correctly? I turned towards the refrigerator, opened the freezer door, and there it was. Another blueberry pie. I had completely forgotten the buy-one-get-one deal from the week before!

So, all is well with the world now, I got to eat a couple of pieces of blueberry pie, my new year can start pie-free and my children are almost able to sleep through night without waking up yelling, "no! it wasn't me!"

Christmas Morning

I wanted to share the best gifts I received today...
First up...
I wrote about this gift last week,
but I wanted to show you a picture or two...

These two pictures are from our family calendar that my sis-in-law creates each year. This year's cover features our nephew Christian and his wife Leigh. The other picture is what you find inside...on your birth or anniversary month, your picture is featured. Like January, birthday girl Kaitlin and birthday boy Levi's pictures are there smiling at us for the month!

and here's what Kaitlin and Hayden got me...

the new English Standard Version study bible...I had this on my list to buy after Christmas...absolutely perfect! And then I opened this from Taryn...

the kid knows me well, its Sudoku puzzles...the easy version...

I also have a present that was re-gifted to me by Hayden,
moments after he opened it...

He did this most likely because he didn't have in his hands
for more that 18 seconds before I borrowed it
"just for a minute, son"...

He told me 20 minutes later I could keep it.

And what is this delightful little toy
that kept me mesmerized for most of the morning?

Something I had in childhood...
during most of 1974,
I walked around with a glazed look because of it...

it was hypnotic, it was mesmerizing, it was...
a spinner.

To be more specific, a Santa Claus spinner. Yes, it does not take much to amuse me, or entertain me. And as I usually do, I've gone overboard with this thing (it's right here by the keyboard as I type, so when the computer is slow I can pick up and play)
And the blurry picture of Santa?
I had him spinnin' so fast there was sparks a-flyin!
I had to grab him in mid spin to get a picture of him!

and, finally, what did my hubby get me?
Exactly what I asked for...a clean mini-van...

A shiny, can-see-the-floor-finally, smelling good mini-van...
it's the best thing he's given me all year!

but of course the best gift of the day was time together...

I pray your Christmas was a blessed as ours!

Taryn And The Cookie...Parental Supervision Advised

Last year I posted a picture of Taryn
making sugar cookies for Christmas...
what I didn't post was the whole story...

so here goes...

This is the picture I posted, Taryn making cookies...
what a sweet girl she is,
making delicious treats for her family and Santa,
I don't even mind the mess...

Oh look, she's picked out the gingerbread man cookie cutter,
maybe she'll make an entire family!

Wow, a gingerbread man...
and a candy cane cookie too!
Maybe she'll make a gingerbread lady,
or maybe even a house for them to live in!

Oh look, she's going for the sprinkles!
I just love sprinkles!

Now this is the moment I left the kitchen to do some laundry...
and when I came back,
this is what I found on the cookie sheet,
ready to go into the oven...

...the poor guy didn't stand a chance
(it's red food coloring, just in case you were wondering)
and while I'm still a little afraid to ask, "why?"
I can appreciate her attention to detail...
the x's for eyes, the grimace...

So this year,
to avoid any further gingerbread man homicides,
or "accidents" as Taryn likes to call it,
I think I'll ask Mark to supervise the Christmas cookie baking...

and I'll go shopping...

Loose Ends Vol. 1 No. 10

I got my favorite Christmas present early this year...it came in the mail today...

My Sis-in-law creates a calendar for our family each year with every member of our family's birthday and anniversary dates. And I mean everyone...from the oldest to the youngest. Plus she includes a picture of every one on their birth/anniversary month. It's perfect to keep up with everyone's special days. She's done one for our family the last few years and I look forward to it every year! Patty Lynn, you rock!

The weather guy said this evening that the high on Friday will be 85...a week before Christmas...ugh...so I'm definately dreaming of a white Christmas. I keep replaying "Snow" from "White Christmas" on Youtube. It's not helping...

I found a new Christmas cookie recipe that I'm going to try this week, from the queen of butter, Paula Deen...they're called White Chocolate Cherry Chunkies... I'll let you know how they turn out...

Kaitlin is busy cutting out snowflakes, she does this every year, and I think she believes she's Buddy the Elf...

all for now...later gator!

Aunt Deb's Got Just The Place For Allison's Picture!

Our nephew Christian and his beautiful wife Leigh welcomed their baby girl Saturday and we can't wait to meet little Allison Leigh! The Lord has truly blessed our family this year with little ones and it is exciting to see our nephews and nieces becoming parents, some for the first time, some for the fourth time!

As our family continues to grow, I'm so thankful...that despite miles, or time zones that might separate us, to get a phone call on an early Sunday morning, to hear the voice of a new daddy, sharing the news that their baby has arrived is such a blessing. What a way to start a Sunday!

What Month Is This?

Wow, when your computer breaks down, time sure flies by! It's the middle of December already, I still have Thanksgiving leftovers in the fridge...and I haven't been able to blog for weeks!

Our computer feels all better now and hopefully I can get back to sharing the wacky, weird stuff swirling around inside this noggin of mine...

A simple shopping story...

Her cart was dripping. The grocery cart she was pushing around the produce section of the big box store I had just entered was drippin...
